Easy Peanut Butter Dog Treat Recipe

My dog, Brody, thinks of himself as a fine dining connoisseur of any meats or veggies that wind up in his bowl … or on the floor. But his favorite thing of all time has to be peanut butter. So, when I found myself with an overly ripe banana one weekend, I thought I would make him some homemade dog treats. He would enjoy them way more than we would enjoy another loaf of banana bread!

I found a great recipe at The Cookie Rookie and decided to try it. These DIY dog treats were extremely easy to put together; the only thing I changed was the shaping.

The original recipe tells you to roll them out and cut them into shapes like sugar cookies. There were a couple problems with that. First, this dough was not suited to rolling as it was extremely sticky. Second, umm, Brody gobbled one of these down without glancing at it. He could care less if they were in the shape of a bone or hydrant! So, I decided to save myself some time and effort and turn these into smashed cookies.

Fair warning, though, if you do not make them into shapes…warn your family that they are for the four-legged members only! My husband grabbed one while I was showering and told me my cookies tasted like crap. LOL :-) However, they would be suitable for humans, too, if you added a cup of sugar!!

    Are Homemade Dog Treats Healthier?

100%! Store-bought dog treats contain a lot of preservatives, fats, flavorings, and chemicals since they have to sit on store shelves for extended periods of time. When you make homemade dog treats, you know exactly what ingredients are going into them. This peanut butter dog treat recipe uses only 6 ingredients, which are good for your dog.

    Can Dogs Eat Peanut Butter?

Yes, it’s perfectly safe to feed your dog peanut butter as long as it’s done in moderation AND does not contain xylitol. This sugar substitute, found in certain human foods, can be poisonous to your dog.

According to the FDA, dogs quickly absorb xylitol in the bloodstream, which can result in a dangerously high insulin release. That rapid release can decrease blood sugar within 10-60 minutes and can be life-threatening if untreated.

    What You’ll Need

With only 6 ingredients, these homemade peanut butter dog treats are a snap to put together. Your four-legged friend will be so happy you did! Scroll down to the recipe card for specific amounts.

    • Egg
    • Crunchy Peanut Butter – Any brand is fine – just be sure it doesn’t have any xylitol in it.
    • Banana – I like to use a nice ripe banana for these treats.
    • Honey
    • Oats – Old-fashioned oats are great.
    • Wheat Germ – If you don’t have wheat germ, you can substitute all-purpose flour instead.
